In reality, topics that appeal to seniors aren't terribly different than what might interest younger family members. Senior reading choices can range from time honored classics to daily gossip columns. What seniors do appreciate, however, is anything that allows them to read and enjoy printed media easier.
Large print books and newspapers make it easy for many seniors to read. Even websites are available in large print, and for those who are computer savvy, they can manipulate their computer screens to be able to increase font size to a comfortable level.
Audio books and related materials can even replace the need to read. Even for people who love to read and have the capacity to do so, audio books and newspapers are enjoyed by many who like to listen as they read, walk, or just putter around the house. This is a great way to allow seniors to multi task if they prefer not to just sit and read for hours at a time.
For anyone who wants to provide reading material to their older family members, age should have little to do with their interests. Topics they enjoyed at 30 will still interest them whether it is crafts, do it yourself home improvement projects, suspense novels, science fiction, or current events.
Some local libraries even have special programs dedicated to seniors where various authors are invited in for readings. These authors may or may not have written books specifically targeted to seniors, but the events are well worth attending for any age.
The new electronic book readers are a big hit with seniors as well. These are perfect for anyone who can't get out much, loves to read, and can't meet the usual borrowing deadlines for a library. A family member can always help to load the device with interesting material and a quick lesson is all most people need to start enjoying the device.
